Scientific studies link Zantac (ranitidine) use with cancer

On-going scientific studies have found that certain people who take medications containing ranitidine (an ingredient in Zantac) have been diagnosed with cancer. Scientists believe this may be due to higher than normal levels of N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) in certain Zantac users. N-nitrosodimethylamine is a dangerous carcinogenic chemical. Carcinogens are substances that cause cancer.

FDA issues warnings about Zantac (ranitidine)

In April 2020, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning for stores to stop selling Zantac and certain other medications containing ranitidine based on the scientific studies linking ranitidine-based drugs with cancer in certain patients.

The FDA warning follows an earlier FDA warning in September 2019 that certain ranitidine-based medications produced higher levels of the carcinogenic substance N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) in certain Zantac users.

In response, CVS, Walmart and Walgreens announced in September 2019 they would immediately stop selling medications containing ranitidine. Then, in October 2019, Sanofi voluntarily recalled Zantac from stores in the United States and Canada.
